Like flame cutting, plasma cutting is a popular material cutting process. Plasma cutting was developed in the 1950s to cut materials that couldn't be cut through the flame cutting process. Stainless steel, copper and aluminum are commonly cut through plasma cutting. Plasma cutting uses an electrically conductive gas, including argon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and air, to make cuts. The gas is ejected at extremely high temperatures, melting through the material and thereby making cuts. Plasma cutting is a relatively inexpensive process and is commonly used on flat sheet and thicker plate.
