UM plate, or universal mill plate, is rolled to width vertically and thickness is determined by horizontal rolls. UM plates have 2 universal mill edges - produced by rolling between horizontal and vertical finishing rolls - and 2 trimmed edges. Metal Supply Co.'s UM plate stock sizes include 1/8" to 3" thickness and 1/2" to 14" width.
Flat bars are produced on rolling mills with smooth, cylindrical rolls. The thickness to width ratio of flat bars is generally pretty large. Flat bars are commonly used in automotive applications, railways and pre-engineered buildings. Metals Supply Co. stocks flat bars with thicknesses from 1/8" to 3" and widths from 1/2" to 14".
