The "Charpy" test is a standard test that measures high-strain rates of materials and determines the amount of energy that is absorbed by a material during fracture. The amount of energy that is absorbed during "Charpy" testing is a measure of a the structural steel's toughness. To conduct a "Charpy" test, the structural steel is placed in a machine in which a pendulum axe swings and hits at a notched sample of the steel. The energy absorption or transfer can be determined by the height difference of the axe before and after fracture. "Charpy" testing can be done easily and results can be obtained quickly.
